The Corporate Carbon Footprint: Foundation for our Climate Neutrality.

Since 2020, SHOP APOTHEKE EUROPE focuses on developing a comprehensive climate strategy and establishing a carbon management process. Aiming at establishing an effective approach which enables management in the long-term to integrate climate aspects into strategic and long-term decision making but at the same time acknowledges the urgency of global climate action.

Since October 1, 2020, SHOP APOTHEKE EUROPE offsets emissions. However, offsetting is just the instrument, following the logic of an internal carbon taxation, fostering the effective reduction of emissions to decouple the company’s carbon footprint from its fast growth path. The annual process of SHOP APOTHEKE EUROPE’s carbon management consists of three annually recurring steps: Measure, offset, reduce.

We have measured our corporate carbon footprint for 2021 and plan to continue doing so in the future. We are actively being supported in this process by our partner Cozero. Cozero helps companies drive an effective decarbonisation and transformation strategy, considering the financial and economic implications. It uses the most innovative technology to manage the transition to a low-carbon economy.

SHOP APOTHEKE EUROPE has offset the emissions that occurred in 2021 and is committed to continue doing so in the future. These include emissions from heating and electricity, employee commuting, as well as from the transport and logistics segment.

We are now working with the offsetting partner Patch. This partner provides a platform to scale consistent climate action, enabling us to purchase carbon credits that will neutralise our company's CO2 emissions using international and transparent carbon offset projects.

With Patch, we have thus succeeded in neutralising our emissions through emission reduction certificates. In other words, we also invest in projects that do not avoid CO2, but also draw it back out of the atmosphere through so-called Nature-Based Solutions (NBS). The projects supported include highly efficient cook cookers in Rwanda and a reforestation project in Guanaré, Uruguay.

Through measures, such as switching to electricity from renewable energy, a green delivery option, and reducing print marketing, we have been able to reduce our emissions. These amount to 1.5kg CO2 per order in 2021. Our target is to convert all our sites to electricity from renewable energy sources by 2023. Our Sevenum headquarter is already fully converted. This conversion is the main driver for the company-wide reduction of Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 80% by 2025.
